Getting the right DJ for your wedding reception can be key to having a really fun and successful party to cap off your special day. However, if you choose the wrong DJ, you may have real trouble getting your party off on the right foot. Many couples opt for hiring a DJ instead of getting a live band to perform for a range of reasons, including the fact that a DJ is less expensive and using a DJ can offer a lot more choices in terms of the music that the guests can dance to.
When you’re choosing your DJ there are a number of important factors to consider. For instance, do you want a DJ who just spins good tunes, or are you looking for a DJ who will come with a sophisticated light show, disco balls, and fog machines. If you want all the glitz and dazzle, it’ll cost you, but if that’s what you want, and you’re planning to get married in a large to medium-sized town, then you’re apt to have plenty of different DJ companies to choose from. Of course, for you folks who are getting married in a small town that’s far away from a major metropolitan center, then your choices might be a lot more limited.
If you’re trying to plan a wedding reception that won’t break the bank, I’d go with a DJ over a wedding band every time. But don’t hire a DJ sight unseen unless you have a good recommendation from someone like a good friend or a relative whose musical tastes you absolutely trust. When you’re checking out a DJ ask if he/she has any video posted online such as on YouTube, or if they have a mix CD of their favorite tunes they can send out as a sample. Any DJ who’s legitimate and any good will have samples or will offer to meet with you so you can check out their music selection, and of course, their sound system and any lighting effects they use.
Once you’ve picked out a DJ that you like, be sure to get an agreement in writing so you know what they’re providing, their hourly rate, any possible extra charges, and if they’d be willing to stay beyond the agreed-upon quitting time if your wedding reception is really rocking and you don’t want to send everybody home when they still want to boogie. Getting a contract in writing will prevent any last minute understandings that could mar your special day.
